5 Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Your New Job

Be Inquisitive

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and plenty of them! As a new recruit, you won’t be expected to know all the ins and outs of the company instantly. Focus on understanding how your new company works by learning first-hand. You will find the more questions you ask, the quicker you will learn about your new role and your new surroundings. Questions can also open the door to new opportunities within the company as it shows your mentors and colleagues that you are open and ready to learn!

Set Goals

People who set goals in the workplace are more successful. Simple! You waste 30% of your working potential when you don’t set and focus on a goal, and if you don’t set a goal then how do you know what you are working towards? Schedule regular reviews with your line manager to set objectives and discuss the steps you will need to take to achieve them. Most companies will have a bi-annual or quarterly review system in place to help you track your development within your role, so make sure these are prioritised in your diary!

Go Back to School

Most employers will offer a career building programme where you can enrol in courses to further develop your personal skills. Welcome this opportunity with open arms – it’s never too late to start learning! It doesn’t cost you anything as an employee and it could help you acquire skills that enable better ways of working within your team. There could also be an opportunity for you to take external courses in order to progress your skills within your role, so discuss any opportunities with your line manager to figure out what is best for you.

Get Feedback

It’s probable that you are starting in a role that was previously acquired by another employee, so to help understand what is expected of you – get feedback! Your colleagues could be used to a certain way of working from your predecessor, so feedback from them will help you develop and progress in areas that might have been seen as weak spots. It’s also an opportunity to propose new ideas with the support of those around you whilst gaining knowledge of past experiences.

Enjoy Yourself

It’s important that you enjoy what you do. You won’t produce your best work if you are unhappy in your environment, with happy employees being reportedly 12% more productive in their job. Make the most of the opportunities around you, build relationships with colleagues and make work an enjoyable place to spend your day. Companies with happy employees are known to outperform the competition by around 20%, so if you find yourself feeling down or pressured in any way, speak to a trustworthy person in your team to ensure that you are put back on track in no time.
