How to decide whether it’s the right time for you to move jobs…
Over the past decade attitudes towards changing employment has rapidly changed. In the past it was far more common for someone to have one or two employers during their career, whilst nowadays we are seeing most people moving roles every couple of years. In fact, research has shown on average we change employers around 10-15 times during our lifetime. For many of us changing jobs can be a lengthy and stressful process, so it’s important to be sure it’s the right position and time for you to move. Here are a few important things to consider when moving roles…
Do you feel like you’re at a dead end?
You like your job and the people you work with, but it has one major problem – there is no opportunity for development and career progression. Development and career progression are essential for any job role. If you feel like there is no room for you to progress it will leave you feeling unengaged and restless. Career progression is a strong motivator and can make you feel more invested in your company. It will also help you develop your skills and help you move to a higher position in your career. If you are moving jobs because you’re looking for more career progression, it’s important to mention this in your job interview as it shows you are ambitious and willing to develop in a role.
Recognition
A workplace that offers genuine employee recognition encourages positivity, productivity and innovation. If you’re not receiving the right amount of recognition it will make you feel taken for granted and the likelihood of you staying in that role will be slim. For recognition to be successful it needs to be timely, fair, consistent and clear. It also needs to be personal to the individual, certain forms of recognition such as public or private will affect people in different ways.
Work-Life Balance
For many of us, having a healthy work life balance is one of the most important things we look for in a new position. Whilst work is a vital part of our lives, it’s important to be able to take a step back and recharge. People that have a healthy work life balance have fewer health problems, are more engaged at work and are typically happier. Employers that support work-life balance encourage employees to take time off, they provide fully equipped breakrooms where they encourage people to take regular breaks and offer flexible working hours.
