Denmark Work Permits And Visas
Helping your business expand into Denmark with specialist PEO services
Remain compliant with Danish visa laws and work permit requirements with the help of our expert Denmark PEO services
Work permits and visas are a vital aspect of compliant global business growth, and are essential documents when looking to work or employ individuals who will be working in Denmark. Acquiring the correct work permits and visas for your staff working in Denmark is a task which necessitates a large amount of time, money and resource – and something which must be handled in accordance with Danish regulations. This is something many businesses may have in short supply, and therefore need the help of a specialist PEO company to achieve this goal.
Similar to various European Union (EU) countries, citizens of Nordic, European and European Economic Area (EEA) countries are not required to obtain a work permit or visa if their stay is less than three months and they enter via a Schengen Visa. This also includes the Faroe and Aland Islands. Those who reside outside of these aforementioned areas are considered as ‘third-country nationals’ and therefore need both work and residence permits to lawfully live and work in Denmark. Applications for work and residence permits can be completed through the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI).

Denmark Expansion Advice
What are the types of Danish work visas?
There are numerous types of Danish work visa schemes which may be applicable to your employees working and living in Denmark. The most common schemes are as follows, as noted by SIRI:
- Fast Track scheme – suitable for those who have been offered a job in Denmark by an SIRI-certified company and a quick start and flexible permit is necessary.
- Positive Lists – suitable for those who have been offered a job in Denmark which is currently listed as a profession currently experiencing a shortage of qualified or skilled professionals.
- Pay Limit scheme – applicable for those who have been offered a job in Denmark with a salary which is at least equal to the pay limit amount for the Pay Limit scheme or the Supplementary Pay Limit scheme.
With so many different types of visa schemes, it is extremely important to obtain the correct work visas for your employees in Denmark. Failure to obtain the appropriate work visas could result in fines and in more severe cases, imprisonment. Our Denmark PEO services can help relieve you of this burden and ensure each of your employees’ work permits and visas are dealt with compliantly.
What are the types of Danish residence permits?
There are two main types of residence permits which are applicable to those wanting to work in Denmark, including:
- Temporary residence permit – these temporary permits are valid for between one to two years and can depend on the reason for residency (in most cases: work, study, family reunification and so on).
- Permanent residence permit – this type of residence permit requires the employee to have lived in Denmark for at least eight years.
Understanding the requirements for each different employee can be a task laden with complications, and one which must not be completed incorrectly. If your company intends to employ several employees in Denmark, it is vital that you have access to experts who can ensure your compliance for each individual overseas worker. As a result, you will be mitigating your risk of non-compliance and preventing any application errors from inhibiting your expansion process.
How do I apply for a Danish work permit & visa?
Citizens from Nordic countries are not required to obtain additional visas, work permits or residence documents. However, there are other requirements which need to be considered such as:
- A tax number
- For stays over three months, the individual must register their address with the Civil Registration System (Folkeregister) in order to obtain a Central Personal Registration number (CPR), health insurance card and tax card.
For EU citizens, it is a legal requirement for them to register with SIRI for a residence document declaring they are entitled to both live and work within Denmark. Documentation for this process includes:
- National ID, or valid passport with a passport-sized photograph
- A document outlining the reason for applying for the residence permit as an employee
- Completed and signed OD1 application form
For all other applicants needing to apply for a work permit and visa in Denmark, they are required to apply through SIRI’s website in their native country and can be completed by employers (given a power of attorney form has been completed). There are a number of elements which need to be completed before the application is submitted, including but not limited to:
- Acquisition of appropriate case number ID
- Fees to the relevant Danish authority need to be paid, unless you are exempt
- A biometrics appointment made at the local Danish Embassy
After this has been completed, it is necessary that the applicant has the following documents ready for the appointment at the Embassy:
- Proof of permit payment
- Signed and completed power of attorney document
- Full photocopies of passport
- Job offer or employment contract, including all relevant information about the position and terms of employment
- Any educational or vocational qualifications which are relevant to the role
How much does a Danish visa cost?
The cost of a Danish work permit and visa will depend on the types required for each individual employee, their length of employment and several other factors.
In addition, standard base fees do not account for any incorrect forms which are submitted or any further correspondence which is required. In turn, this will not only delay the application process, but may also incur higher fees as a consequence. Ensuring this process is handled compliantly from the start can guarantee a smoother global expansion process.
