What types of Indian work visa are there?
India’s visa system is broken down into job roles and also country of origin. However, the main type of work visa is called an Employment Visa, most commonly referred to as an E Visa.
While the Employment Visa is the most common Indian work visa, it is important that you know this visa will cover your needs in order to ensure full compliance when employing people in India.
How do I apply for an Indian work visa?
E Visas are only available to employees of companies registered in India, which means visa application cannot be started until an employee has an employment contract and your company has a registered entity, or PEO, in India.
Employees and employers should also check that an Employment Visa is the correct type to allow you to live and work in India.
Each Indian visa application may need to provide additional, unique details. However, as a minimum applicants will need to provide:
- A valid passport
- Two passport style photographs
- Completed visa application form
- An additional information form signed and submitted along with your visa application form
- An employment contract detailing terms of employment – this must be written in English
- Fingerprints and facial biometrics
As well as applications varying by visa type, they also vary depending on the employee’s home country and whether an employee is travelling with family or dependents.
While the visa application is submitted online, applicants must also take a signed and printed copy and submit it at the Indian Visa Application Center or at Indian Mission. You can find out more about Indian visa application process on the Indian government website.
How much does an Indian visa cost?
As with most international visas, the cost of Indian work permits largely depends on how long your visa needs to last and your country of origin. However, a rough estimate for Indian visas is about $100-180 (~£80-£140). This is of course before we take into account the cost, resource and time used to process this visa as well as the cost of any non-compliance or denied applications.
